In short, the architect answers: what should this building be, how should it feel, and how do people move through it?
The structural engineer: making it stand up — safely
The structural engineer makes the vision buildable and safe. They size and detail the skeleton — foundations, beams, columns, slabs, connections and lateral systems — so the building carries its own weight plus the loads of people, wind, snow and seismic activity, for decades.
The engineer answers: will it stand, will it resist every load it will ever see, and does it comply with the building code? Their calculations and sealed drawings are what turn a concept into a permit-ready, constructable set.
Where the two roles meet
The best projects are a genuine partnership. The architect shapes the space; the engineer makes it real without compromising the intent. - A purely cosmetic remodel with no changes to the structure: often neither is legally required — but a quick engineering check is cheap insurance.
- Multifamily, hospitality or commercial work: both, plus a coordinated team of consultants.
